The automotive news countdown show | MotorScribes Dispatches (29th March – 4th April, 2017)

Last week has been rather action-packed with a bunch of new launches; however taking centre stage is the Audi Q3 petrol variant and the Triumph Bonneville Bobber. Speaking about the Bobber, we have an interesting story on a custom one built around an old Jawa motorcycle! Tata Motors is back in the news for their exciting new JV with Jayem Automotive and last but not the least, team MotorScribes headed out for a lesson in off-roading at the Mahindra Off-road Academy. Audi Q3, now available with a petrol engine The launch of the Audi Q3 1.4 TSFI in India is the company’s fourth production introduction this year and it also happens to be the first Q model to come with a petrol engine. The 1.4 TSFI engine in the Q3 delivers 150 hp and 250 Nm of torque. It is mated to a six speed S tronic transmission and is capable of accelerating the Q3 from 0-100 km/h in just 8.9 seconds! Performance is a key factor here, however Audi has ensured that the Q3 remains rather frugal as well and delivers 16.9 kmpl according to ARAI tests. Having said that, Audi is currently offering the Q3 1.4 TFSI only with front wheel drive, however we are hopeful that a quattro variant will eventually make it to the market. Launched at INR 32,20,000 onwards ex-showroom New Delhi, the Audi Q3 1.4 TFSI FWD is decent deal good deal for those who are looking at stepping up to the luxury class. Triumph Bonneville Bobber launched in India Drawing on the custom bobbers from way back in the 1940s, this new Triumph has a solid bit of heritage and attitude mixed in. It is based on the Bonneville T120, however the bike has been stripped down to its purest essence and all the elements of the bobber have then been incorporated – including the low stance, single seat, wide flat bars, minimal bodywork, single headlight and sculpted tank. To complete the look, Triumph has stuck to the spoked wheels with a wide rear tire. Powering the Bobber is the same 1200cc high torque engine that also does duty on the T120. It offers 77 PS of power and generates a solid 106Nm of torque. Mated to a slick 6-speed gearbox, the Triumph Bonneville Bobber promises to be easy to ride. At Rs 9.09 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi), the Bonneville Bobber makes for a pretty good deal! Jawa Bobber – Darkside Customs Sachin Shinde has been tinkering with motorcycles for a long time and his custom outfit – Darkside Customs has done some brilliant work over the years. When he told us about his plans to build a custom bobber using an old Jawa motorcycle as the donor bike, we couldn’t resist documenting the entire build. It took a while, but the end result is a bike like no other! The complete documentary of the build can be found on our YouTube channel – a must watch! Tata Motors ties up with Jayem Automotives Tata Motors is on a warpath to make headlines every week. Just days after the launch of the Tigor, the company has dropped another announcement and this one will definitely get the enthusiasts thinking! In a bid to offer a niche line of aspirational products based on their existing series of vehicles, Tata Motors has formed a joint venture with Jayem Automotives. The JV will be known as JT Special Vehicles Pvt. Ltd., and the plan is to work towards performance enhancement and appearance of series vehicles from Tata’s passenger car range. Essentially, this company will act in a similar manner to what AMG is to Mercedes-Benz, Abarth is to Fiat and what the M division is to BMW. Stay tuned for some rather hot vehicles are going to roll out of this venture. Mahindra Off-Road Academy Team MotorScribes got a chance to head out to the Mahindra Off-Road Academy and get some serious lessons in off-roading. With two expert instructors at our side, we were given a fair amount of theoretical knowledge about the nuances of off-roading and there was a healthy mix of practical sessions tossed in for good measure as well. We drove through massive trenches, climbed up steep inclines, got through a slush pit and survived! Needless to say, it was a blast out in the dust, grime and slush, but we’ve come back as better off roaders for sure and have newfound respect for the Mahindra Thar – that beast can sure take a beating.
